ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE

(See the special report/ flyer that is included with this mailing for full details)

The long term sustainability of any Catholic school depends on providing excellence in both academics and Christian faith formation.  However, to achieve that, the school must have financial viability and effective recruitment initiatives.

In response to the May open forum comments and to the positive auction and teacher’s wish list activities of the past year, a parent based advancement committee is forming. This committee will focus on development of financial resources and long term sustainability of the school. Goals for this year include:

·         Initiate an annual fund

·         Enhance existing events: including the Annual Dinner Auction, Catholic Schools Week activities, Grandfriends Day, Fund the Need initiatives, Open House events and further development of the Teacher’s Wish List.  These events can directly support the financial viability of the school without having to have on-going multiple fundraising events and raffles.

·         Development of an Alumni Organization/ Database

We invite you to get involved in this committee.  Please contact school board representative Monica Ybarra at ybarram@charter.net or Mr. Oslance, principal, for more information.

PARENTS & FRIENDS/ REMINDERS

§    Please remember to save your Box Tops, Campbell’s Soup labels and Tyson Chicken labels over the summer

§     STATE SALES TAX HOLIDAY ON SCHOOL SUPPLIES – AUGUST 6th THRU THE 15th

ENROLLMENT UPDATE

§    We expect about 220 students to be enrolled in 2010-2011 (about the same as last year)

§    We will have 2 sections of Grade 2/ Mrs. Klucker and Mrs. Hodapp will be the teachers

§    We will have aides in Grades 1, 4, and one aide to assist in Grades 5-8. Pre-K will have 4 aides.

OPEN FORUM/ FOLLOW UP

In May, we held a Town Hall meeting and invited parents to make recommendations concerning programs and plans for 2010-2011. Here is an update on our progress in putting your ideas into action:

SPANISH
We will launch a pilot program for 2010-2011. It will involve 3 phases:

§    PHASE 1: Optional Spanish classes for students in Grades 5-8 (begins in September)
See flyer that accompanies this mailing for full details

§    PHASE 2: We are exploring options for how to introduce students in Grades K-4 to Spanish vocabulary. We hope to have a decision on this and begin the program by no later than the second semester (January 2011)

§    PHASE 3: We will have a Town Hall meeting or an extensive survey in November-December for the purpose of determining the extent of our future Spanish curriculum. Possible considerations: Will Spanish be required for all students? Will we hire teacher(s) for this subject? How will the school day be impacted if Spanish is required?

MATH CURRICULUM
According to our test scores, there are a few areas of our math scores that are not as strong as the other categories. We have developed a four part strategy to address this matter:

§    Mr. Oslance is meeting with all math teachers to carefully examine the individual student test scores over the past 3 years to observe trends and make a thorough analysis

§    A consultant has been hired. She is examining the test score data and our text books.

§    The consultant will meet with all math teachers to analyze the scores, texts, and teaching methods. She will assist teachers in providing the latest in teacher research on the skills that need additional focus.

§    ITBS practice tests will be a part of our test preparation for 2010-2011.

PART TIME COUNSELOR
We have been in touch with a counselor from Catholic Social Services/ Belleville. She will be making a proposal (to be reviewed by the School Board) that will include providing services for both students and parents via a program called “Family Connection.”

EDLINE
The faculty will be required to update EdLine at a rate of two times per week. The updates will focus on using more of the features that the program provides. In addition, we will move to make sure that all parents activate their accounts! Our ultimate goal: use EdLine to reduce the huge amount of paper reports and notices that are sent home each week!

STRATEGIC PLAN
At our August Open House (evening of August 18), our School Board members will give a brief presentation of our action plans for 2010-2011.

EVALUATING TEST SCORES

Standardized tests were never intended to be used as a comparison test between schools. In fact, it is an invalid statistical method to make such a comparison. Many additional factors that are involved (and vary from school-to-school) render a mathematical/ precise comparison to be flawed.

It is important to note that standardized tests have 2 main functions. Standardized tests are DIAGNOSTIC reports that measure:

§  Individual student progress (Parents may measure their child in light of national norms)

§  School curriculum/ state standards (Schools may evaluate their instructional goals and objectives by measuring trends that are followed on a year-by-year basis).

The Belleville Diocese administers the ITBS in the fall so that teachers have the remainder of the calendar year to address learning standards. Diocesan Catholic schools have a mission to educate (to the best of our ability) all students who wish to receive a Catholic education. Therefore, a wide range of academic skills are present in our diverse student population. Nevertheless, Holy Trinity School has students who are highly evaluated in relation to the entire country:

FANTASTIC SUCCESS!!!

Thanks to all who attended and supported the 2010 Auction! We had a huge crowd and a wonderful evening. Patrick Moss has announced that the profit for the auction should be about

    $64,500

That amount includes over $10,000 for “Fund the Need”

Thanks to all !

FUND THE NEED

Our special appreciation is extended to all who made contributions to our “Fund the Need” invitation! These donations will allow us to add FIVE interactive whiteboards to our classrooms! This initiative is part of our curriculum expansion plan that will incorporate a new program (WebLessons).

Reminder: Mrs. Britton obtained a grant for an additional interactive white board (SmartBoard); thus, a total of SIX will be added in 2010-2011.

Spring Concert Was Truly…AWESOME

Mrs. Bickel presided over a joyous evening of song, instrumentation, and enthusiasm by our ENTIRE student body. The program booklet was entitled “Amazing Grace” and the theme of the evening was: “Story of a Song.” Special readings were done by Emerson Wallace, Elayna Blecher, Zach Bilzing, Hayden Ybarra, Hailey Fischer, Reilly Delaney, Renae Oelrich, Katelynn Peterson, and Katlynn Heitman. Soloist performances were made by Ava Hipskind, Jillian Humphreys, and Ben Underwood. Impressive presentations were made by the Beginner Band, Band, Concert Ensemble, Pre-K Choir, Fourth Grade Recorders, Fifth Grade Guitars, Sixth Grade Rhythm Group, Handbell Choir, Seventh Grade “Alle, Alle, Alle” leaders, and the entire Student Body Choir! The night concluded with a fantastic finale: AWESOME GOD!!!  It was truly an awesome night to remember!

Report Card for Mr. O

The Wednesday folder also includes a summary of the survey (conducted in March) concerning the job performance of the Principal. Forty-six families responded to the written survey request. The data was compiled by School Board President Craig Simoneaux. The individual written comments were organized by category to help organize the responses.

Thank You from Catholic Urban Programs

Joe Hubbard, Gerry Hasenstab, and the Catholic Urban staff of Fairview Heights sent us this note: “Thank you for your generous donation of food items to our Food Pantry. Without ongoing support from organizations like yours, we would not be able to continue our ministry to feed the hungry. We appreciate your caring and sharing.” Mrs. Kauling points out that our weekly food collections have netted in almost 2,000 food items that have been donated to various food pantries during this school year! This is another fine example of how our students respond to our mission of service to others!

Speech Team Receives Ribbons!

Mrs. Kauling, Mrs. Eckert, and Mrs. Stankey were willing to help organize the participation of Holy Trinity into the Belleville Diocese Speech Meet. Working with far less time than most schools, Holy Trinity was nevertheless able to place two winning entries: Anna Kurtz/ Renae Oelrich received a Blue Ribbon in the category of “Duet/ Humorous Speech.” Bianca Kurtz received a Red Ribbon for in the category of “Humorous/ Individual Speech.” We are also pleased to recognize the efforts of our other team members (all duets): Sydney Krisher/ Victoria Adamske; Julia Michaels/ Mackenzie Herring; Chase Enright/ Kylie Fischer. Bell Choir: Special Presentation

Mrs. Bickel has informed us that our award winning BELL CHOIR has been asked to be a special part of an important liturgy at the Belleville Cathedral on Sunday May 23 at 2.30 PM. Bishop Braxton will preside at the Mass. More details on this event in the days ahead!

LIBRARY AUTOMATION PROJECT

Parents in Grades Pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 will be the first groups to test our new automated library system capabilities. Our volunteers have processed about 2,500 of our 6,000 books. New spine labels, bar codes, and Accelerated Reader stickers must be placed on each book to activate the system. The new system allows for check in and check out procedures to be done via “scanning” the bar codes.

The grades listed above will begin our implementation of the automated services. In the months ahead, we will expand our services to eventually include all books in our library.

Autographed Big Bird Picture

Sesame Street is an American educational children's television series and a pioneer of the contemporary educational television standard, combining both education and entertainment. Sesame Street is well known for its Muppets characters created by Jim Henson. It premiered on November 10, 1969, and is the longest running children's program on television.

Innocent, curious Big Bird is a dead ringer for a six-year-old child in an eight-foot-two-inch yellow-feathered body. Big Bird was the first Muppet to appear on

Sesame Street
, and from the very beginning, he has observed the world with wide-eyed enjoyment and asked a steady stream of questions at every step of the way.

AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE

Here are some activities conducted by our teachers during Black History Month and at other times in our curriculum:

“How They Made Their Mark” Bulletin Board

Kindergarten: read several selections to the students about the life of Dr. King. The class then colored a mini-book for them to take home and share with their families. A poster of Dr. King was displayed in the classroom.

The 5th and 7th grade students had an opportunity to earn extra credit by matching an important African American to their accomplishment. For example, Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to go into space.

The 7th graders read a novel called Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. The novel takes place in Mississippi in 1933. The main character, Cassie Logan, learns about the inherent prejudice of whites against blacks in the South during the difficult times of the Depression.

The second grade have what is called the "Challenge Packet".  Each week, the children are given a packet of work that includes anything from social studies to math.  We have had papers dealing with "Black History Month" and African American culture/especially dealing with Dr. Martin Luther King

One of our parents (Kim Brooks) has suggested that we invite our entire school community to offer suggestions for next year’s observance of Black History Month. Please direct any ideas (speakers, books, websites, other resources) to Mr. Oslance via e-mail (htschoolp@sbcglobal.net ) or by delivering your input to your child’s homeroom teacher. We extend our appreciation to Kim for supplying the enthusiasm and initiative for launching this wonderful effort!

Bishop Braxton’s Visit to Holy Trinity

Bishop Edward K. Braxton visited our school on Wednesday February 24.

The Bishop visited all of our students. He was able to have extended discussions about Confirmation with students in Grade 8. All groups asked Bishop Braxton various questions; he mentioned that the most intriguing question was: “What is the most difficult part of being a bishop?” The Bishop stopped by and heard a music performance by Grade 4. He also received a booklet from our faculty that included their insights concerning a pastoral letter concerning our mission as educators and Catholics in the Belleville diocese.

Mission Prayer for Lent” (see page 2); students offer up a quiet lunch on Fridays in Lent to focus their minds and hearts on God in a period of silence; we continue our canned food drive on every Friday. These are just some of the ways we journey through this season in which we turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel!

Open Forum Comments/ continued…

A parent asked if some of the money raised from last year’s auction went to the teachers as a type of “bonus.” ANSWER: As you know, (in 2009-2010) teacher salaries were frozen to the 08-09 level. However, because the staff was not being paid the diocesan scale it was determined to offer them a “good will” stipend as a promise that we would make every effort to address the salary issue. This payment was made in the fall of 2009. Incidentally, the new budget for 2010-2011 has been adjusted so that all teachers will be paid the diocesan scale.

Dress Code Items

§    The School Board will review the proposal concerning shorts at their March meeting; the faculty will also take this matter under advisement. We received only a handful of comments from parents.

§    Reminder: the color of hair should never become a distraction to the learning environment. On regular days of special dress code days, it is not permitted to alter one’s hair color so as to be unusual.

Parking Lot Concerns (2nd Notice)

As I direct traffic each morning, I have noted the following areas of concern. They only apply in a few cases…but please address these matters if they apply to you:

§    Please…SLOW DOWN coming around the curve (by concession stand)

§    Please…DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE on the parking lot while you are driving and children are present.

§    It would help…if (while parked and waiting) you would drop your children off right away/instead of waiting until you get to the front of the line. The traffic flow would really improve if this was done!

§    Please…as you depart from the main drop off area…USE YOUR BLINKER if you are making a left turn and proceeding to park in the lot. People who are following you “assume” you are just heading for the exit.

Congratulations!

Congratulations are extended to: Mrs. Emily Joost (and her husband Matt). On Friday January 29, Abigail Ruth Joost was born! Our prayers are extended to their family---especially from Grades 2 & 3!!!

If you OPPOSE this recommendation, please send a note to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday Feb. 5. Faculty and Administration will consider the input we receive.

Thank you from Veterans Affairs

On behalf of the St. Louis VAMC JB Division patients and staff, we would like to extend our appreciation to you for your donation of homemade cards for our Veterans. The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors thanks Holy Trinity School for your generous donation of $155. Your gift helps us to carry out our mission to educate women about the life saving techniques of early detection and to help provide free mammograms for underserved women. We appreciate your help in the fight against breast cancer. Janelle Hail/ President/CEO

Thank you for thinking of us! The Catholic Urban Programs are immensely grateful to you for your donation to our organization. With your generous contribution, we will be able to continue to help those in need. Without the support of people like you, we would not be able to continue our ministry to the poor and lonely. A Special Announcement

Mr. Oslance thought that this wonderful letter should be shared with everyone!

While at the mall today, I heard a large group of people clapping.  I walked towards the clapping and imagine my surprise when it was our own Mrs. Bickel playing the most beautiful music with her bells.  The entire crowd, as well as myself, found ourselves listening and were moved by her ability to play such beautiful music.  She received multiple accolades while I was there.

I don't know if Mrs. Bickel plays the bells at the mall for any reason other than her love for music.  I can tell you that her gift brought a lot of joy to many people today.  I was so proud that she is one of our teachers.  Happy Holidays! Monica Ybarra

PREPARE THE WAY

Deacon Art shared a wonderful message with Holy Trinity parishioners this past week. “Prepare the way of the Lord----make straight the path.” This message of the prophet Isaiah reminds us to “straighten out” any relationships in our lives that seem to be tangled or going in the wrong direction. Bringing the patience and understanding of Christ into a difficult situation with a family member, relative, co-worker, or acquaintance…what better way to bring the presence of Jesus into the holiday season???

Thanks from a Veteran

Recently, Holy Trinity School conducted a special fund raiser to help a Veteran who has recently lost his job. Student Victoria Adamske initiated this project. The following note was received from the very appreciative recipient.
I want to take a moment to thank you for all you have done...words alone are inadequate in expressing how I feel; that so many young people care so much to selflessly give so abundantly to the needs of a stranger. I am humbled and incredibly blessed to be a part of this wonderful Christian community.   It is amazing to me that here in the most challenging time of my life I am finding myself the most richly blessed.  Thank you for your kind and caring intervention.

Special Veteran Day Events

Mass for Peace & Justice on November 10

=

Special Project

Our students used their Word processing skills to send friendly greetings to our Veterans.  Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 used Microsoft Word to write short letters of support and prayer to our veterans.  They included colorful clip art to cheer and encourage those who serve our country.  Letters ended with thoughts that demonstrated how Holy Trinity Catholic School prays for our service men and women on a daily basis. Thanks to the father of Regan Schreckenberg---whose employer donated a terrific color laser printer and allowed our greetings to be displayed in color. Thanks to Mrs. Klucker, whose neighbor “hand-delivered" our computer printed letters to Jefferson Barracks VA Hospital in St. Louis.  Mrs. Klucker also included cards that her Grade 2 class made for our veterans.

All Saints ~ All Souls

Our Eighth Grade students made a special presentation to all students and demonstrated the wonderful spiritual accomplishments of many Catholic saints. Mrs. Britton helped to coordinate this inspiring effort.

Mrs. Coonan (Director of Faith Formation) and Fr. Joe have helped all to commemorate the souls of the faithful departed with a special book of prayer and remembrance. This book will be on display in the school foyer throughout the month of November.

Living Rosary

Mrs. Coonan did an extraordinary job organizing the “Living Rosary” ceremonies. She designed special programs, seating arrangements, and a very prayerful service. Mrs. Timko accompanied the prayer with wonderful musical accompaniment. Each classroom may reuse the booklets for prayer services in their classrooms during other parts of the year.

Our tutoring program will begin on Monday November 9 from

Student of the Month

Two Eighth Grade students were recognized by the Mayor of Fairview Heights and the Fairview Rotary Club at a luncheon on November 3.

  • ANNA KURTZ-daughter of Frank and Mel Kurtz/ members of Holy Trinity parish. Anna has contributed extensive hours of service: parish landscaping, book fairs, fish fries, bingos, Santa’s Cottage. Anna is very devoted to liturgical ministry: server, cantor, choir member and is training to be a lector at weekend masses. She is a very talented vocalist and has had major roles in Althoff High School Drama Camp performances. Her leadership skills include being Student Council President, Co-Editor in 2008-2009 of the school paper, and a tireless helper in motivating students to show their school spirit!

  • JESSICA SANDERS-daughter of Steve and Holly Sanders of Corpus Christi parish. Jessica is always willing to help others: visiting elderly residents of a retirement community, being a student participant for a liturgical conference, volunteer at animal shelters, helping to gather homework for absent students, helping to baby sit for families with deployed husbands, tutoring fellow students in need, and always being there for family, friends, and those in need---whenever the occasion arises. Jessica is recognized by teachers as a person who always says “yes”---and cheerfully does more than expected. She serves and is often a leader in her work with the school newspaper and yearbook. Jessica is very involved with her parish as an usher, lector, and worker at parish events. She is also a leader in the parish youth group.

Gym-Dandy!

  • Thanks to Tim Werner for refurbishing wood for the new crucifix recently installed in the gym

  • Thanks to Frank Kurtz for using the “lift” to fix items in the gym (He also adjusted lights in the foyer over in the main school building, too!)

Wish List: Fulfilled!

  • We would like to thank the family of Amaree Moss for donating several boxes of Clorox wipes and the “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” game to the 4th grade classroom.

  • We would also like to thank the family of Marisa Luna for donating the vcr/dvd combo to the kindergarten class.

  • Thank you to the Elery family, for granting the wish for a keyboard stand. Mrs. Bickel and the Music Department are most grateful!

  • Mrs. O’Neill received a filing cabinet from Pat Prindable.

The list for all the items wished for can be found on the Holy Trinity website under Parents and Friends

Titan Bowl #2

For the second year, the Eighth Grade was divided into two football squads: the Bajorek “Bears” vs. the Mr. O “Packers.” For the second consecutive year, the Bears came out on top! Chase McCorkle set a Titan Bowl record by scoring 3 TD’s in the winning effort. August Ley scored twice for the Packers. The friendly game concluded with pizza, soda, and other snacks for both teams…and Mr. B wishing that the “real” Bears could have been so good!

New: Digital Photography Classes

Mrs. Britton has introduced a new series of lessons: digital photography. Students were introduced to proper care and handling of the camera. Various photographs were studied for techniques and camera angles. Students studied the internal makeup of the digital camera. Students learned how the digital image was transferred to the memory device and how to crop your pictures. Memory card storage capabilities were discussed and a chart of approximate number of pictures that can be stored on that memory card. Assignments of actual digital pictures will be done.

Bake Sale: Great Success

The Eighth Grade held a bake sale after all masses on the weekend of October 3-4 at Holy Trinity Church. Proceeds go to helping to defray costs for the Eighth Grade trip in May. Reports indicate that over $1000 was raised in this effort! Thanks to all who were so generous!

Wish: Fulfilled!

Through Parents and Friends wish list and Lisa Lee (the PE wish list coordinator)à Bob Nekola from St Stephens saw a published wish list. He let Lisa know that St Stephens had unused hockey sticks stored there. Mr. Bajorek went there and found that it was much more than hockey sticks that were being stored. St. Stephen parish/ athletics donated sticks, bowling sets, Hi Li scoops, peg climber, parachutes, balancers, nets and a lot of jump ropes. In all, Mr. Bajorek estimated that it was up to $2500 worth of equipment that was donated from St. Stephen. Holy Trinity School wishes to acknowledge all involved. Cut Back!

The lack of fiscal year 2010 funding to the state of Illinois Board of Education has caused a cut back. The Parent Guardian Transportation claims for the 2008-09 school year will not be funded. We received a memo from the Board of Education with this information.

“Lighten Up”

We hope you attended the special presentation at St. Stephen Church on Sept. 23-24. The informative and humorous program by Doug Brummel certainly reminded all in attendance that following Jesus is a fantastic way to live a full and happy life. For more insights about this powerful speaker, visit the site:

October 1/

Join us for an evening in which YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!!! P & F provides many ways to reach out and participate in volunteer opportunities that will help our children at HTCS. Also…sample some great snack items and beverages!

It Is the Law: Physicals

2nd Notice.

Grades Pre-K, K, 2, and 6 must have a FULL physical turned in by October 15 in order to be in attendance at school. This is an Illinois State law. Sports physicals are not acceptable. Mrs. O’Neill has sent many forms & reminders about this requirement (in fact, she started sending materials at the end of last year!). Please comply with this regulation. One final note: when you notify Mrs. O’Neill that an appointment for a physical has been set up, she will not need to keep sending you “reminder notices.”

First Grade: Liturgical Preparation

Mr. Oslance and the First Grade teachers are preparing the students for their beginning experience of Mass. They will soon attend a Tuesday morning Mass (October 6) and participate in a special presentation of the scriptures and the homily. Our hope is to gradually present the Eucharist to the children in a way that helps them to appreciate each of the various parts of the Mass.

Scholastic Book Fair: Great Success

Thanks to Martha Sullivan for organizing another great event! Martha, in turn, thanks all the parents who donated a great deal of time and work in assisting our students in finding the books of their choice. Highlights:

  • Clifford had a wonderful time visiting with everyone at the Pizza Party and Pancake breakfast

  • 141 new titles were added to our library and classrooms

  • 11 students won books

  • 25 students won posters

  • Look for new Accelerated Reader tests…coming soon!

  • Teacher drawing winner: Mrs. Britton

  • Student guessing game winner:
    Kelsey Hartwell/ 3rd Grade

Students SHINE at Special Conference

A national conference was held at Holy Trinity Church last week. Those who attended learned a great deal about how to prepare candidates for entrance into the Catholic Church. Since some new members are grade school children, the conference sought some of our students to share ideas about how to help communicate with young people. The leaders of the conference reported to me that our students brought great insights to the convention! We are very proud of the contributions made by:

  • Ben Underwood

  • James and Laura Simoneaux

  • Jillian Humphreys

  • Abby Lorek

  • Jessica Sanders

  • Jasmine Travers

Parking Lot Procedures

Thanks to all who have helped to improve the traffic flow and safety in the morning/ afternoon drop off/ pick up process. A few reminders:

§    When you are stopped along the sidewalk in the morning: please have your son/ daughter open the door and walk to the school. Please do not wait until you are the “first” car in the line

§    Our eighth grade students will sometimes assist Mr. O in helping the students to exit the car in the morning. They are also there to welcome the students to school!

§    Any comments on the morning procedure? Please e-mail Mr. O: htschoolp@sbcglobal.net

Faculty In-Service Days

What occurs at a faculty “In-Service” Day? The diocese asks us to have 3-4 special sessions in order to further teacher/ learning development. Our focus in 2009-2010: Curriculum Mapping. We are carefully “matching up” the state standards, our curriculum, and standardized testing data. Such a procedure is a very systematic way to regularly review the rigor and effectiveness of the overall learning system for a school. We will provide regular updates as to the progress of our work. (Note: faculty also engages in an individual process known as “professional development.” They attend workshops, classes, seminars, and institutes in order to keep up with the latest advances in educational practices. We will also provide details of these ongoing efforts.)

Auction “Party Zone”---Update

Each year at the Auction, people sign up for various “Party Zone” events. What happens at these gatherings? Here are some details:

§    The Mommy and Me Tea Party, hosted by Missy and Olivia Underwood, was a memorable occasion.  Guests were dressed in their Sunday best as they were served finger sandwiches, fruit, desserts, tea, and lemonade.  Real china, tea cups, and table linens made it especially nice as the girls served tea.  Photos and party gifts were given as remembrances for this special mother-daughter event.

§    The Bunco Bash was held on August 8th at the school cafeteria. This ladies only night, hosted by last year's 2nd grade class, was so much fun. Terri Kurtz was the big winner that evening. Everyone enjoyed an assortment of appetizer, drinks, and fun.

§    Mr. O’s Football Night featured a host of gridiron fans who met at TGI Friday’s for the epic struggle between the Packers and the Bears. Mr. B (and his wife) cheered on the Bears---but his efforts fell just short! However, everyone had great food and an escape from watching the Rams!

Blessing of Pets & A Special Project

Spencer Pet Rescue of St. Clair County is a No-Kill, Not-For-Profit and state licensed dog/cat rescue facility located in O'Fallon, IL.  They are operated by a small group of volunteers who are dedicated to saving the lives of all breeds of dogs and cats.  They rely solely on the generosity and support of the public for funding and donations.  They do not receive any governmental funding. Spencer Pet Rescue's mission is to save as many animals as possible while maintaining quality care and placement.  One such program is their “foster -to -adoption” program which allows families to foster an animal until they find the right one for them or to foster an animal until it can be adopted by another family.  It is only with everyone's love, support and donations that they are able to continue with this work. Please refer to the flyer that was sent home concerning this very worthwhile opportunity.

Sports News

1st and 2nd Grade Girls Soccer

The 1st Grade girls recently joined forces with 2nd Grade girls as the combined team faced St. Teresa’s of Belleville and St. Peter and Paul of Waterloo.  Both games were closely contested with Holy Trinity coming up short in each game.  1st Grader Grace Vincent scored an excellent goal to get the girls on the board in Waterloo.  While no one scored against St. Teresa’s, several shots just missed getting Holy Trinity on the board.  Abbie Reno was fantastic in goal both games, while Olivia Underwood and Bella Luna came close to scoring on several occasions.  Sam Mueller and Olivia Prindable did a great job getting the ball down the field, while Marlee Zabicki and Madison Northrup were mixing in the action.  The girls continue to improve every game and are giving great effort while on the field.
3rd and 4th Grade Boys Soccer

On September 3rd, the Titan 3rd and 4th Grade boys team netted their first victory with a solid 3-0 win at St. Mary/St. Augustine in
Belleville.  Assistant Coach Tom Underwood attributed the win to "consistent hustle, good teamwork, and playing in position."  After an opening 1st quarter of heavy Titan offensive pressure, halfback Gary Spencer got the scoring started early in the second quarter.  Spencer intercepted a SMSA clearing attempt, made two dribbles and put a hard shot on goal from 15 feet to beat the goalie.  Solid goaltending from Brandon Reno and great defense from halfback Malik Lewis kept the game at 1-0 into the 3rd quarter.  The forward line of Hayden Ybarra, Ben Underwood, and Tony Schneider accounted for the second half scoring -- both with fine passing and Ybarra goals -- to seal the Holy Trinity win.

Student Council Elections

Congratulations to the 2009-2010 Student Council leaders who were recently elected:

President; Anna Kurtz; Vice-President: Deva Randolph; Secretary: Lizzie Michael; Treasurer: Alex Schneider; Sports Commissioner: Grant Gall; and Environmental Commissioner: Sydney Krisher. The first Student Council meeting will be held on September 16.

Peace Begins Here

On September 11, Fr. Ray reminded all who were gathered for Mass: peace begins with each one of us. The terrible violence that will forever mark the date of 9-11 will be reversed only by our love and patience. Our school community has adopted a special campaign: “Peace Begins Here.” Sharon Coonan, our Director of Faith Development, has provided a special poster (in our entrance foyer) and a bookmark for each student to remind us that we must all be committed to the work of peace. Some suggestions from the bookmark:

§    Pray for peace often

§    Wait my turn patiently

§    Share what I have with others

A Birthday to Remember

One of the former principals in our school’s history (Sister Patricia Graveman) had a special place in her heart for many special liturgical events…one of those being the birthday of our Blessed Mother. On September 8, we “recaptured” the special meaning of that day in a number of ways:

§    Fr. Joe provided us with a beautiful “litany prayer service” and our school community joined together in a musical/ chant devoted to Mary; Anna Kurtz proclaimed a reading that called us to holiness

§    We sang “Happy Birthday” to Mary

§    At lunch, we had a birthday treat and offered a special prayer for Mary

§    We concluded our day with a Hail Mary and prayed for all mothers

Catechetical Sunday

On September 20, all religion teachers and Catholic educators will receive a special commissioning and blessing for the 2009-2010 school year. This ceremony asks God’s grace upon school teachers, PSR educators, and those entrusted with faith formation. The rite will take place at St. Stephen (9.30 am Mass) and at Holy Trinity (10.30 am Mass). Please pray that the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge will guide all those who seek to “teach as Jesus did.”

Thanks for Your Patience

The resurfacing of our parking lot has been completed. Thanks to all who made adjustments and helped to make this process go smoothly. Our special gratitude is extended to Frank Kurtz---who tirelessly supervised the operation. In addition, Frank (and a host of other parents) have helped to add new lines for crosswalks, four square courts, basketball courts, and designated parking spaces for faculty. Our new parking lot is a more safe environment and has some new fun features, too!!!

Parking Lot: Re-surfacing on September 8/ 9

  • September 8: main work will be done on parking spaces that are directly in front of the church entrance ways. Access to the morning school drop off locations may need to be re-routed. The afternoon drop off locations may also be re-routed. Directions and maps are included in the Wednesday folder to assist you and we will have personnel outside to direct you. Please allow extra time for drop off and delivery. Note: we will open the cafeteria and allow people to arrive as early as

Reporter: Kim Gall
The 2nd Grade girls played two exciting soccer games this past week.  The team lost 4-1 to St. Peter & Paul (
Collinsville) with Karinna Gall scoring the lone goal. The team won 4-1 against St. Peter & Paul, (Waterloo) with Karinna Gall scoring three early goals and Nikki Reno adding the other.  Alyssa Peterson and Nellie Chambers came close to scoring goals and Claire Franke played aggressively on both ends of the field.  Alex Werner and Amelia Daniels were also mixing in the action.  The girls play terrific team soccer with great excitement at both ends of the field.  Each girl plays several positions throughout the game with everyone contributing to the team’s good play.  Keep it up girls!

The 5th and 6th grade boys’ team lost to three tough opponents over the past two weeks.  Derek Shearer and James Simoneaux scored goals for their team.  Ben Zabicki and Tyler Wade showed great hustle at both ends of the field.  The boys played these games without any substitutes and have faced opponents with enough players to field two teams.  The boys have shown improvement with each game, and although tired, they play hard until the final whistle.

Director of Faith Formation: Sharon Coonan

Holy Trinity Catholic School was formerly served by Mrs. Carolyn Starr (Director of Religious Education). Her replacement is Mrs. Sharon Coonan. The following article (written by Mrs. Coonan) serves to introduce Sharon and explain her new position (Director of Faith Development).

I'm originally from Louisville, Kentucky and a theology graduate of Brescia University in Owensboro, KY.  My husband, Paul, and I have 7 children ranging in age from 26 to 6, of which 4 are still living at home.  I am so grateful for having this opportunity to serve all the parishioners and families here at Holy Trinity Church and School.  My role is to collaborate with the leadership of our Church community in providing the Parish and School with a process of Life-Long Spiritual learning.  I am assisted in this endeavor by Mary Lou Walker, (Coordinator for PSR, Parish/School Sacramental Preparation, Children's Liturgy of the Word and SEEDS) Gene Gallant, (Coordinator for RCIA and The Sunday Morning Scripture Study Series), the faculty/staff at Holy Trinity School and a remarkable number of volunteers.  I am also responsible for any current or future parish faith formation programming.  A very challenging task, however, I feel so grateful and blessed with having been guided here by the Holy Spirit to offer myself in service to all.
